REFORM OF ARTICLE 6 OF THE COVENANT FOR CIVIL AND POLITICAL RIGHTS IN GENEVA
Volunteers of the international platform CitizenGO and the spanish Right to Live have talked with members of the Human Rights Committee to ask them to vote against the attempt to promote abortion as a 'right'. On the agenda, the Committee has not voted today on the reform of article 6 on the right to life of the conceived. However, this proposal has been debated and considered that the amendment of the Covenant, which would imply the universal promotion of abortion, could constitute an excess of powers of the UN Committee.
CitizenGO: "The Committee's claim to promote abortion is inconsistent with the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Article 6 (5) of which protects the right of unborn children. Seventy percent of the associations that have submitted comments to the reform attempt advocate safeguarding the prenatal child's right. "
MADRID, 27 DE OCTUBRE DE 2017.The secretary of the UN Human Rights Committee, Gabriella Habtom, acknowledges that she has received more than 132,000 emails asking for the right of the child to born. Habtom has said that this UN agency "will take into account the opinion of civil society". The conversation took place on Friday when representatives of the international platform CitizenGO and the Spanish Right to Live have talked with members of the Human Rights Committee to ask them to vote against the attempt to promote abortion as a 'right'.
Because of the term problems, the Committee has not voted today on the reform of article 6 on the right to life of the conceived. However, there was a debate on this proposal, which would imply the universal promotion of abortion, and considered that the amendment of the Covenant could constitute an excess of powers of the UN Committee.
CitizenGO spokeman, Luis Losada, explained the initiative in these terms: "The Committee's claim to impose abortion as a 'right' worldwide is incompatible with the Civil and Political Rights Pact, whose article 6. 5 protects the right of unborn children. Reforming that pact would be an unacceptable overstatement of their powers”.
The United Nations Human Rights Committee is consulting on a new draft General Comment on article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Article 6 reads as follows: "The right to life is inherent in the human person. This right shall be protected by law. No one can be prived of the life arbitrary". In addition, art. 6.5 states: "The death penalty shall not be imposed for crimes committed by persons under 18 years of age, nor shall it be applied to women in pregnancy."
However, the Draft General Comment on Article 6 of the Covenant defends abortion in some cases, promotes eugenic abortion in breach of the provisions of the International Convention of Persons with Disabilities and considers that the state must guarantee this practice against the life of the conceived .
