"The exhibition in the European Parliament of Asia Bibi's 'Freedom for Asia Bibi' is a new opportunity to continue pressing the government of Pakistan to fight for the life of this Christian mother, since after the long prison term her health is very weak and her life is in grave danger," explains Ignacio Arsuaga, president of HazteOir.org and CitizenGO.
The documentary 'Freedom for Asia Bibi' was presented in Spain in April 2015 in the framework of the First International Congress on Religious Freedom 'We are all Nazarenes #WeAreN2015' organized by HazteOir.org and CitizenGO. The premiere was attended by Asia Bibi's husband, Ashiq Mashiq, and his daughter Eisham, who also participated in the II International Congress 'We are all Nazarenes #WeAreN2016' held at the UN headquarters in New York in May of last year. The testimony of Asia Bibi's family about the ordeal they are going through shook the audience.
The case 'Asia Bibi'
In April 2015, Ashiq Mashiq and Eisham had the opportunity to speak in the Italian Parliament to explain the situation of Asia Bibi. In addition, accompanied by Ignacio Arsuaga, President of HazteOir.org, they were able to greet Pope Francis during the general audience in St Peter's Square.
In November 2016, Asia Bibi's daughter, Eisham Ahiq, made an exclusive statement to HazteOir.org in which she states that "when she leaves prison my mother hopes to go to live in Spain." The statements, recorded in Pakistan, can be seen in this link.
In addition, HazteOir.org and CitizenGO have promoted several citizen petitions in Spain and other countries to demand the release of the unjustly imprisoned Pakistani Christian.
Asia Bibi – a mother of large Christian family, a farm worker – has been in prison for seven years, accused of violating Pakistan's anti-blasphemy law in 2009. Her death sentence is pending review by the Pakistan Supreme Court.
A documentary that does not leave indifferent
'Freedom for Asia Bibi' is a co-production that uses testimonies and resources recorded in 2014 on the expedition of HazteOir.org and CitizenGO to Pakistan headed by Ignacio Arsuaga.
Filmed in Pakistan, the film tells a story full of cruelty: that of a Christian woman sentenced to death by hanging after being falsely accused of blasphemy against Muhammad. The events that triggered her death sentence began in the summer of 2009. Asia Bibi was working in the field and went to a fountain to refresh herself and drink. Immediately some women protested because Asia is not Muslim and therefore they considered that she was contaminating the water. From that moment they demanded that she abandon her Christian faith and convert to Islam. She objected by invoking Jesus Christ.
After the request for review of sentence by her lawyers, in the face of flagrant injustice, the final judgment had to be held – which had already been postponed on previous occasions – in January 2016, but was again postponed 'sine die'. One of the judges to intervene alleged that he had participated in the case against Mumtaz Qadri, the murderer of Salman Tasser, the Punjab governor murdered on 4 January 2011 for showing his support for Asia Bibi.
"The life of Asia Bibi depends on in a great extent on the pressure we create. We are confident that spreading her case and her unjust sentence in international forums will contribute to her prompt release," says Ignacio Arsuaga.
